Seminar Topic:
Industry Visit at Quest ION IT Philippines

Date: January 28, 2025
Venue: Quest ION IT Philippines
Audience: Team and Company Employees

🎯 Objective:
To gather background on how the company works and its relevance to the IT industry.

II. 📚 Reflections and Learnings

Our industry visit at QUEST ION IT Philippines was a meaningful and eye-opening experience. As a fourth-year BSIT student, I found it both relevant and timely, especially as we prepare to transition from academic life into the professional world. The visit gave us an actual glimpse of what lies ahead and helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world practice.

Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Mr. Ammiel Dela Fuente, a Lead Developer at the company. He gave us a brief yet thorough introduction to the background of QUEST ION IT—how the company started, where it is based, and the services and technologies they specialize in. He also shared the organizational structure, mentioning the different teams and their roles in the development lifecycle.

  • Software Development Practices: What stood out was how Mr. Ammiel explained the software development practices they implement daily, particularly the use of Agile methodology and version control systems like Git. It emphasized how essential these tools are for collaboration and efficiency in real-world projects.
  • Collaborative Work Environment: The visit highlighted the importance of teamwork, communication, and adaptability in the IT industry. It reinforced the idea that success isn't just about technical skills but also about working well with others and learning continuously.
  • Real-World Expectations: The visit helped me realize that being in the industry is more than just writing code—it involves understanding user needs, meeting deadlines, and maintaining high standards of quality. It gave me a clearer perspective on areas I need to improve, both technically and professionally.

In summary, the industry visit was a valuable experience that motivated me to be more proactive in preparing for my career and gave me a better understanding of what will be expected once we graduate. I’m grateful for the opportunity and look forward to more experiences like this to strengthen our readiness for the industry.

III. 🛠 Practical Applications of Learning

The industry visit to QUEST ION IT Philippines offered several insights that we can already begin to apply in our academic and personal development as BSIT students:

  • Agile Methodology: While we are still in a school setting, we can incorporate practices like sprint planning, setting timelines, and conducting regular progress check-ins into our group projects. This can improve both our output and time management.
  • Version Control Systems: The visit emphasized the importance of using version control systems like Git. We can make Git a core part of our project workflow to simulate real-world collaboration, resolve conflicts, and track changes more effectively.
  • Teamwork and Communication: Mr. Ammiel’s emphasis on communication, teamwork, and continuous learning reminded us that technical skills alone are not enough. We can start building strong communication within our project teams using tools like Trello or Slack, and continuously explore new tools and frameworks beyond the classroom.

By incorporating these practices into our academic activities, we can better prepare ourselves for the workplace and adapt more quickly once we graduate.

IV. 🌟 Positive Feedback

Overall, the industry visit was well-organized and professionally handled. Here are some highlights:

  • Seamless Organization: From transportation to coordination with the host company, everything was smooth and timely. The schedule was well-structured, allowing us to maximize the short time with the company representatives.
  • Clear Communication: The organizers ensured we were properly guided throughout the visit, and all necessary information was communicated clearly in advance.
  • Educational and Enjoyable: We truly appreciated the effort put into making the event both educational and enjoyable. The careful planning made the experience meaningful and productive.

V. 💡 Suggestions for Improvement

While the event was informative and well-executed, here are a few suggestions for future activities:

  • Open Forums: Allocating more time for open forums or Q&A sessions with the industry professionals could allow more opportunities for participants to ask questions and engage with the experts.
  • Pre-Visit Materials: Providing some background information about the company beforehand could help students engage more deeply during the visit.
  • Interactive Activities: Incorporating a short hands-on activity or live demo could make the experience even more interactive and enriching.

✍️ Final Thoughts

The industry visit provided invaluable insights into how the IT industry operates and gave us a clearer understanding of the skills and attitudes needed to succeed. I’m excited to apply the practices we learned and look forward to further opportunities to engage with professionals in the field.
